Step 1
Select a desk from an almost unlimited number of styles used in commercial offices or adapted from them - a silver or gray steel desk, a laminate-wrapped model, or a simple black table with a keyboard tray. Set the printer and/or fax machine on a rolling cart if they won't fit on your desk.
-
Step 2
Stay true to the look with any plain metal file cabinet or sleekly modern rolling file-storage box.
-
Step 3
Choose a chair for comfort first, then style. The ideal chair lets you adjust seat height, back angle and armrest height; many of these ultra-adjustable chairs have a high-tech look, too.
-
Step 4
Pick a client or conference table and chairs - if you need them - that complement the look. A glass-topped steel table plus fiberglass Eames chairs are possibilities.
-
Step 5
Keep the walls simple - white, off-white or gray paint is most suitable. Hang only a minimal number of framed items such as professional credentials, line drawings (perhaps something pertaining to your field) or a treasured black-and-white vintage photo.
-
Step 6
Opt for ample lighting that doesn't put a glare on the computer screen; if necessary, add a special glare-thwarting screen to the computer. Halogen and fluorescent desk lamps will suit the look. Recessed ceiling can lights or hanging industrial-style fixtures can be used for ambient lighting.
-
Step 7
Leave the windows undressed, or cover them with venetian or vertical blinds or unadorned roller-style window shades.
-
Step 8
Keep the floors plain. If you're installing a new floor, go with modern sheet vinyl, vinyl tile, terrazzo tile, monochromatic ceramic tile or an extremely low-level commercial-type carpet so that your chair's castors will move easily.
