Use this technique to gain speed and to absorb bumps while going fast on telemark skis.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ski Clothing
  • Telemark Ski Equipment
  1. Step 1

Drop one knee as if you were going to perform a telemark turn. Keep skiing in a straight line.

  2. Step 2

Bend both knees so that the dropped knee is nearly touching the ground and the lead leg is bent at a 90-degree angle. The foot with the dropped knee should be about 1 1/2 feet behind the lead foot.

  3. Step 3

Adjust your body so that each foot supports an equal amount of weight.

  4. Step 4

Lift both hands several inches and point the ski poles backward so your hands and poles are not dragging on the ground.

  5. Step 5

Get down as low as possible; this will increase your speed and is useful on flats and long traverses.

  6. Step 6

Stand up and switch lead feet and dropped knees when one set of muscles becomes fatigued.

Tips & Warnings
  • For maximum shock absorption, perform the telemark tuck at a half-crouch instead of getting as low to the ground as possible. This will let your knees and ankles absorb some of the bumps in choppy snow.
  • Telemark skiing is a physically demanding sport that could result in serious injury. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
