How to Skate Across Flats on Telemark Skis

Use your telemark skis as skates - it's the quickest way to propel yourself across flat sections of snowy terrain.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Ski Clothing
  • Telemark Ski Equipment

Step1
Spread the front of your skis apart to form a V shape.
Step2
Weight your right ski by shifting all of your body's weight onto it.
Step3
Push down and backward on your right foot.
Step4
Throw your body weight forward while you push off with your right foot.
Step5
Glide forward on your left ski from the momentum created by pushing off with the right one.
Step6
Step down onto your left foot.
Step7
Push off with this foot and glide with your right ski. Make sure the skis are in a V shape when you push off.
Step8
Plant and push off with both poles each time you push off with a foot.
Step9
Repeat these steps, gaining speed with each push.
Step10
Practice until you feel comfortable with this motion. You should feel like you're speed skating on skis.
