Instructions

    • 1

Seal new wood with a coat of clear varnish before waxing.

    • 2

Clean old wood along the grain with a mixture of 1/4 c. linseed oil and 3/4 c. mineral spirits on a piece of fine steel wool. Go over the surface again with mineral spirits on a rag and let it dry. Make sure you have adequate ventilation when working with mineral spirits.

    • 3

Apply liquid wood wax with a soft cloth. Pour wax on the cloth, not directly onto the wood.

    • 4

Use circular motions and cover the entire surface.

    • 5

Wait an hour or so and buff the first coat of wax with a clean, soft cloth.

    • 6

Apply another coat, working with the grain.

    • 7

Buff it again after an hour, and then once more after 6 or more hours.

    • 8

Dispose of rags soaked with mineral spirits according to the instructions on the manufacturer's label.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wax polish should be used only on indoor woods, as it lacks durability.

I am in the process of putting cypress floors down in my new house that I am building. The cypress was cut by my father on his portable sawmill and dried. I have planned the boards, and fit them with tounge and groove. They still need the last sanding before I start to wax them. Does anyone have any information about waxing cypress floors? Has anyone tried this? Any information would be helpful. Thanks!!

After applying a fresh coat of varnish, use 600-1000 grit sand paper and butchers wax. Applying the wax with the sand paper buffs the wood of any high spots and gives it a protective finish.
