How to Herringbone Uphill on Snowshoes

It has just snowed a few inches over packed snow and the snowshoeing is great, except you find yourself sliding backwards when heading uphill. In these conditions, the herringbone step can be used for added traction on hills.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ski Hats
  • Warm Clothes
  • Ski Gloves
  • Ski Poles
  • Snowshoes
  1. Step 1

    Face up the hill you want to climb.

  2. Step 2

    Turn your toes outwards so that they form a 45-degree angle. Your snowshoes will make a V-shape.

  3. Step 3

    Plant your poles on both sides of your body for balance.

  4. Step 4

    Take a step with the right foot, keeping the toes pointed out.

  5. Step 5

    Place your entire right foot flat on the snow. This will allow for a maximum amount of surface area to be in contact with the snow and improve your traction.

  6. Step 6

    Move your left foot over your right foot, keeping both sets of toes pointed away from your body.

  7. Step 7

    Plant your left foot as you did the right.

  8. Step 8

    Lift your poles, replanting them further up the hill.

  9. Step 9

    Continue up the hill until you reach your destination.

Tips & Warnings
  • You will know you are doing the herringbone properly when you do not slide back and when your tracks make a zipperlike formation in the snow.
  • Snowshoeing is a physically demanding sport that could result in serious injury. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
