A high-tech interior has furnishings that celebrate machine-made origins and value functional style; such an interior tends to be minimalist and unfussy. Here are some ways to accessorize a high-tech room while preserving the look.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Grommet-top Curtains
  • Industrial-look Light Fixtures
  • Pillar Candles
  • Plain Cylinder Or Square Planting Containers
  • Plain Cylinder Vases
  • Simple Metal Picture Frames
  • Throw Pillows
  • Towel Racks
  • Wire Baskets
  • Mover's Quilts
  • simple, saucerlike candleholders
  • low, commercial-type area rugs
  • flowers (calla lily, tulip, Gerbera daisy)
  • modern, industrial-look lamps
  1. Step 1

Choose a simple abstract painting without a frame, or black-and-white photographs (perhaps architectural or industrial in subject). Prints and pen-and-ink sketches can be displayed under ground-edge glass that's clipped to the print and mat without a frame.

  2. Step 2

Select simply made pillows for beds and seating, and use them sparsely. Solid colors and geometric designs work well, as do canvas and linen fabrics.

  3. Step 3

Find lamps that feature a functional, not artsy, look. Possibilities include aimable halogen or pharmacy-style lamps, or the tripod floor lights used by professional photographers.

  4. Step 4

Use simple area rugs such as flat-woven solid-color designs or plain geometrics.

  5. Step 5

Keep the tchotchkes to a minimum. A cylinder vase of tulips, calla lilies or Gerbera daisies - or a single bloom - is a pretty touch; a plain cylinder - or square-shaped pot - of glossy ceramic or plastic will be ideal for a dracaena or cactus.

  6. Step 6

Choose a grommet-top curtain for a window treatment or to divide a sleeping area or office from your living space. Other window treatments include roller shades, vertical blinds and plain venetian blinds.

  7. Step 7

Consider a mover's quilt as a cover for an old chair, as a bedspread or as a light-blocking window treatment.

  8. Step 8

Indulge your candle fetish with a pillar candle in an ultraplain holder such as a square saucer.

  9. Step 9

Use wire or mesh baskets for holding kitchen utensils. These baskets can hold paperclips and notepads in the office, too.

  10. Step 10

Select light fixtures that are industrial in nature. Round, plain-metal housings are fine in the kitchen; theatrical lights (bare bulbs surrounding a mirror) work well in the bathroom.

  11. Step 11

Find towel bars and other bathroom and kitchen fixtures that are commercial in nature - items intended for hotels and restaurants.
