Rainbows are cheery and inviting. Bring one into your home with a rainbow candle. This technique will teach you to make a candle with concentric rings of various colors.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Put several chunks of wax in a separate double boiler for each color. It's best not to use more than three colors.

  2. Step 2

Prepare the mold and wick (see Related eHows). You'll want to use wick tabs with these candles.

  3. Step 3

Use a candy thermometer to monitor the temperature of the wax. Turn off the heat when the paraffin reaches 180 degrees F.

  4. Step 4

Stir coloring into the melted wax (see Related eHows).

  5. Step 5

Add scent by shaving off a few pieces from a scent block or adding 1/8 oz. undiluted candle scent for every pound of wax.

  6. Step 6

Pour the first color of wax into the mold, almost filling it completely.

  7. Step 7

Wait until the wax begins to form a skin and then cut the skin open and suck the liquid wax back out with a turkey baster. Put it back into its double boiler.

  8. Step 8

Repeat this with the other colors. The longer you let the wax cool, the wider the colored rings will be.

  9. Step 9

Allow the completely filled candle to cool and trim the wick to 1/2 inch.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure that small children and pets are kept out of the candle-making area.
  • Don't pour wax down your sink - it will cool there and plug up the pipe.
  • Wax is flammable at high temperatures and should never be left unattended.
  • Use a fire extinguisher or baking soda rather than water if you have a wax fire.
  • Paraffin wax will catch fire at 375 degrees F. Flash points for other types of wax vary.
