How to Use the Paste Commands in Premiere

Adobe Premiere offers some special paste commands. In addition to copying selected material and pasting it in the usual manner, you can also paste a long clip so it fits into a shorter space, you can paste a shorter clip so it stretches to fit a longer space, or you can paste the settings from one clip onto another clip. These instructions apply to Adobe Premiere 4.2 or later for Windows.

Things You'll Need:

  • Adobe Premiere

    Paste to Fit

  1. Step 1

    Select and copy a video clip into your computer's Clipboard.

  2. Step 2

    Select a destination track that is longer or shorter than the clip.

  3. Step 3

    Select Paste to Fit from the Edit menu. The Out Point extends as far as needed to fit in the longer destination, or contracts to fit the shorter space.

  4. Paste Special or Paste Custom

  5. Step 1

    Select and copy a video clip into your computer's Clipboard.

  6. Step 2

    Select a destination track for your paste.

  7. Step 3

    Use Paste Special from the Edit menu. A dialog box offers an array of ways to customize your paste.

  8. Step 4

    Preview settings in the dialog box, then select your preferences.

  9. Step 5

    Click Paste.

  10. Normal Paste

  11. Step 1

    Select and copy a video clip into your computer's Clipboard.

  12. Step 2

    Select a destination track for your paste.

  13. Step 3

    Use the Paste command from the Edit menu. The video is pasted unaltered into a longer destination, but if the destination is shorter, the clip's Out Point will move automatically so the clip can fit.

Tips & Warnings
  • Typically you would paste a clip into an empty track space in the Construction window, or paste it to replace a selected clip.
  • In some cases, Premiere just isn't able to extend the clip far enough. If this happens, it will leave part of the destination blank on the right side.
