You can "trim" your Premiere 4 clips to include only the frames that you want. You can either remove frames by setting new start and end points for the clip with the In and Out buttons or by excising frames with the Razor tool.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Adobe Premiere

    Cutting With the Razor Tool

  1. Step 1

Drag a clip into a Construction window.

  2. Step 2

From the Window menu, select Construction Window Options.

  3. Step 3

Adjust your settings so that the frames show (not the titles) and so that the icons are big enough to see easily. Click OK.

  4. Step 4

Move your cursor to the bottom toolbar on the Construction window, and then move the slider until the text box reads, "1 frame." Now each frame will be visible in the Construction window.

  5. Step 5

Move through the window until you locate the first frame to be trimmed.

  6. Step 6

Click on the Razor tool from the Construction toolbar at the bottom of the window.

  7. Step 7

With the Razor tool active, click on the first frame to be cut. This splices your clip.

  8. Step 8

Move until you locate the final frame in the series to be cut.

  9. Step 9

Click on the Razor tool again to activate it.

  10. Step 10

With the Razor tool active, click on the final frame to be cut.

  11. Step 11

Select the frames between the two razor cuts.

  12. Step 12

    Delete the selection.

  13. Step 13

Fill the space by dragging the remaining clips side by side, or add a new clip at this point.

  14. Step 14

    Save your project.

  15. Using Ins and Outs

  16. Step 1

    Open or create a project.

  17. Step 2

From the File menu, open the file (clip) that you want to edit. The file opens in the Clip window.

  18. Step 3

Use the Clip window controls to move to the first frame that you want to use in your movie.

  19. Step 4

Click on the In button. This is now the new starting point for this clip.

  20. Step 5

Move to the frame where you want to stop the clip.

  21. Step 6

Click on the Out button. This is now the new end point of the clip.

  22. Step 7

Drag the clip into the Construction window. Only the frames between the new In and Out points will appear.

Tips & Warnings
  • The first and last frames are the default settings for In and Out points.
  • Note that the source clip still contains the extraneous frames, but they will not play in your movie.
  • Setting new In and Out Points affects both tracks in a linked clip. To leave one track (such as audio or video) at the previous setting, you will have to permanently break the link.
