1
Consult directly with the synagogue you plan to visit or join. Ask about attire.
-
2
Consider the dress of the locals in an area you may be visiting. Is their attire casual (khakis and t-shirts), dressy casual (slacks and simple dresses) or rather dressy (suits)?

Remember that women at Orthodox services usually wear ankle-length skirts, long-sleeved shirts and head coverings. Men wear suits, ties and yarmulkes. In many congregations dressy casual is prevalent, with women in dresses or knee-length skirted outfits and men in slacks, a button-down shirt and optional tie.

4
Remain conservative if you're unsure. Women should keep bare shoulders covered with a shawl or cardigan.
-
5
Wear a nice leather shoe, perhaps a loafer for men and a low-heeled slip-on for women.
-
6
Leave the jeans and tees at home.

I've found that as long as my elbows and knees are covered, I'm wearing colors that are not too bright, and my shirt does not show too much cleavage, I'm comfortable and blend in well. The whole idea is modesty. Also, only married women are expected to cover their hair, and many do so with a human-hair wig, so you can't even tell! -

The article suggests that women in Orthodox congregations "usually" wear ankle length skirts. This is very bad advice. In point of fact, very long ankle length skirts that are loose and flowy are considered immodest in many congregations. Although some congregations prefer long ankle-length skirts these are not the norm--regional differences will be a factor. When visiting an Orthodox congregation for the first time a woman would be better off wearing a calf length or tea length skirt in a cut that is cut close to the body but is not too form fitting. A-lines and circle skirts that drape well are fine--broom skirts, 50's-style skirts and gauzy peasant-type skirts are too attention-getting for schul. -
