-
Step 1
Evaluate the glass you already own if you have begun to collect. Do you have patterns you like? Are there some patterns you would like to expand?
-
Step 2
Look through glass guides and make note of patterns you like.
-
Step 3
Decide whether there is a particular period or type of glass you are most interested in if you are unsure how to narrow your selection down. Examine the patterns available and choose your favorite.
-
Step 4
Become informed through reading or talking to experts and collectors about which patterns are rare and which are easier to locate. You can decide to follow either path, but you should be informed ahead of time how easy or difficult your search will be.
-
Step 5
Find out the correct name for the pattern you have selected and learn if it has been known by any other names.
-
Step 6
Learn which company made it and when and where it was manufactured.
-
Step 7
Make a list of the items in that pattern you would like to find and a list of the items you already have. Make notes as to the values of these items.
-
Step 8
Carry the list with you when you shop. Refer to it to be sure you are not buying duplicates and to be sure you are getting a good price.
-
Step 9
Look in antique stores, at glass conventions and in collectors' shops. Talk to the collectors and storekeepers and tell them what you are looking for. If one person does not carry it, he or she may very well be able to point you toward someone who does.
