Most firefighters don't encourage the use of portable heaters in the home. They can add warmth to a room, but they must be used with extreme caution. Know how to use a portable heater safely before plugging one in at your home or work space.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Portable Heaters
  • Smoke Detectors
  • Fire Extinguishers
  • Combination Smoke/carbon Monoxide Detectors

Step1
Read and follow the directions that come with your portable heater.
Step2
Avoid using old, used portable heaters.
Step3
Make sure the electrical cord is not frayed in any way.
Step4
Place the heater in an open space, away from furniture, bedsheets, curtains and pillows. The heater must be at least 36 inches away from anything that could catch fire.
Step5
Place the heater on the floor, not on a rug, where it could be unsteady.
Step6
Know that nothing should be placed on top of your heater. Never lay clothes on the heater to dry.
Step7
Keep children and pets away from portable heaters.
Step8
Turn off your portable heater when you go to sleep.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep a fire extinguisher handy in your home.
  • Have the heater checked before using it each season.
  • Never leave your portable heater unattended.
