Camping is a popular summer travel activity for people worldwide. It's an economical, easy escape, but lighting fires for warmth and cooking can be dangerous. Take these precautions when having a fire outdoors.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Keep a fire extinguisher or a bucket of water on hand when grilling or having a campfire.
Step2
Carry a cellular phone in case you need to make an emergency phone call.
Step3
Make sure children remain at a safe distance from campfires and grills.
Step4
Light your fire or grill in a safe, open place, away from anything flammable. Keep at least a 3-foot distance between a campfire or grill and anything else. Make sure there is no dry vegetation nearby.
Step5
Use kerosene heaters with caution - read and follow directions before use.
Step6
Avoid using candles to light your way in a camper or tent.
Step7
Teach everyone on the trip how to put out a clothing fire: stop, drop and roll.
Step8
Put out all fires before leaving the campsite or grill area.

Tips & Warnings

  • At a campfire, make sure everyone around the fire is wearing tight-fitted clothing. No ponchos, scarves or skirts that could blow in the breeze and catch fire.
  • Keep anything flammable away from fire and heat.
  • In the event of a fire, get your family to safety before attempting to put the fire out yourself. If the fire is spreading too quickly, get everyone away and call 911.
  • Children should never have access to matches or lighters.
