If an attacker tries to punch you, try the surprise move of throwing him or her to the ground.

Difficulty: Moderately challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Martial Arts Supplies
  • Martial Arts Uniforms
  • Martial Arts Videos
  1. Step 1

Step away from the attacker as he or she punches toward your nose with the right hand. Move to the inside of the punch and toward your attacker's body.

  2. Step 2

Keep your forward hand in a fist with the palm facing out and your arm bent at 90 degrees. Swing your arm out across the front of your chest to block your attacker's punching arm. Twist your wrist as you block.

  3. Step 3

Straddle just above your attacker's leg. Your back should be facing your attacker.

  4. Step 4

Drive your left elbow into your attacker's solar plexus.

  5. Step 5

Drive your other elbow into your attacker's ribs.

  6. Step 6

Reach back and grab your attacker's upper arm with your left hand and the same arm's shoulder with your right hand.

  7. Step 7

Push down on the upper arm and shoulder. Your forward leg will be behind the attacker's forward leg as you pull your attacker across your hip.

  8. Step 8

Throw your partner to the ground and escape.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always try to avoid a conflict if at all possible. If you can't avoid a conflict, escape at the first opportunity.
  • Self-defense techniques can cause severe injury. Be cautious when you practice with a partner.
  • If confronted by an attacker, always try to escape first.

on 11/22/2005 Once you've dumped your would-be attacker on his or her behind, it's probably wise to stomp down on their floating rib before attempting an escape. A hip throw may not injure them. Instead, it may give them added motivation to harm you.

on 11/22/2005 Studying here in Korea, TKD and Hapkido are very famous. I have two tips: Use your common sense. If the conversation gets heated, get out of his/her reach. And always remember to go with the motion of the attacker. Resisting is too much work.
