If an attacker tries to kick you, you can dodge or attempt to block the strike, but why not surprise the attacker by countering the kick with a punch?

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Martial Arts Supplies
  • Martial Arts Uniforms
  • Martial Arts Videos
Step1
Watch the attacker's knee to time your kick against the attacker's strike.
Step2
Step to the side to avoid the kick as soon as you see the attacker pulling back his or her knee. (Step to the same side as your attacker's chest.)
Step3
Step forward with your back leg, keeping your weight balanced on both legs.
Step4
Aim your punch to your attacker's midsection, using the arm on the same side as your forward leg.
Step5
Keep your other arm at your side with your hand in a fist as a guard.
Step6
Run away as the attacker struggles to recover.

Tips & Warnings

  • Punch directly to your target using your leg and hips to gain power. Turn the wrist of your punching hand just before contact to increase power.
  • Always try to avoid a conflict if at all possible. If you can't avoid a conflict, escape at the first opportunity.
  • Self-defense techniques can cause severe injury. Be cautious when you practice with a partner.
