    • Bike Tires
    • Mountain Bikes

Choose the right tires for the trail and weather conditions. See "How to Buy a Bike Tire," under Related eHows. Also realize that as a tire wears down it will lose some of its grip.

      • 2

Maintain proper tire pressure. This is important for maintaining good traction. See "How to Maintain a Bike's Tire Pressure for Good Performance," under Related eHows.

      • 3

Select the right gear. You need to plan ahead for this - if you try to shift too late, you may not be able to maintain your speed.

      • 4

Scoot back on the seat. However, if the hill is very steep, you may need to shift forward to get the right weight distribution.

      • 5

Move your weight to the middle of the bike. If you lean too far back, your front wheel may pop up. If you lean too far forward, you'll lose traction.

      • 6

Stay seated unless you know you have enough traction to stand up.

      • 7

Use your bar ends if you have them. They will give you added leverage and will help you keep weight over the front wheel.

      • 8

Practice. If there's a short, steep hill that gets the best of you, turn around and try it again. This is the best way to improve.

Before climbing the hill, shift into an easier gear. Pedal faster and let your cardiovascular strength rather than your muscles do the work.

When climbing steep hills, it's best to stay seated and lean forward and down. Crouch onto your bike and keep the front tire from popping up. If your back tire breaks loose, lean back and up a bit more.
