How to Corner in the Dirt and in Wet Conditions When Mountain Biking

Cornering is one of the least understood aspects of cycling. Here are some tips that can help get you through the trickiest of turns.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Approach the corner with your head up. Always be looking where you want to go.

  2. Step 2

Reduce speed before corners. Brakes applied in the middle of a corner can cause you to lose control. If you must use your brakes in the middle of the corner, use only your rear brake.

  3. Step 3

Lean the bike more than your body. This helps to load up the tires' sidewalls and maintain traction.

  4. Step 4

Shift most of your weight to the outside pedal. The outside pedal should be at the bottom of the pedal stroke.

  5. Step 5

Push the bars down with your inside hand.

  6. Step 6

Practice. Work on your cornering in a dry, empty parking lot. Build your confidence.

  7. Step 7

Relax. Trust the bike. If you're holding the bars in a tight grip and if you always ride the brakes, it's difficult to improve.

Tips & Warnings
  • Choose the right tires for your conditions. Consider buying a front-specific tire for dirt riding. See "How to Buy a Bike Tire," under Related eHows.
