Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Follow crib safety guidelines of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

  2. Step 2

Make sure the crib mattress fits snugly in the crib.

  3. Step 3

Position the crib away from windows, curtains, lamps and electrical cords.

  4. Step 4

Raise or remove mobiles and other hanging decorations from above the crib when your baby is able to stand up and grab them.

  5. Step 5

Put a nightlight in the room, away from bedding, curtains and other ignitable material.

  6. Step 6

Store toys in open containers. (Small children can get trapped in toy boxes with heavy hinged lids.)

  7. Step 7

Place fire-escape ladders in all second-floor or higher bedrooms. Practice using them with your child.

  8. Step 8

Install carbon-monoxide alarms and smoke alarms outside all bedrooms.

  9. Step 9

Never put any stuffed animals, blankets or pillows in the baby's crib. All these items are suffocation hazards. Dress him or her in warm jammies under a sleeper instead.
