Doilies add a formal and traditional look to valentine cards. Dress up your valentines using these simple ideas.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Know that doilies are round, decorative papers with lacy edges that were originally used on platters to enhance the appearance of food.

  2. Step 2

Purchase paper doilies in various sizes at craft supply stores and also at cooking supply stores.

  3. Step 3

Create a card using card stock or construction paper.

  4. Step 4

Plan the size of your card around the size of the doily you would like to use. Some are quite large and can fill an entire 8-by-10-inch piece of paper or even a sheet of posterboard.

  5. Step 5

Use a doily as a decorative background on your card. Glue it onto the card. Draw or glue hearts, Cupids or other decorations in the solid center area. Or write your valentine greeting in this area with a colorful marker or pen.

  6. Step 6

Glue a small doily can inside a card. Write the message on this small doily to dress up your greeting.

  7. Step 7

Trace the lacy edges of your doily with glue and then sprinkle some glitter on the glue. Or trace the edges of the solid area in the center of the doily with glue and apply glitter there.

  8. Step 8

Consider using a large doily as the base of the card. Glue a pink or red heart over it so that the lace provides attractive edging for the heart. Dress up the heart with a small doily that fits inside, and write your message there.

  9. Step 9

Use fabric and doilies together for another great card. Cut out a piece of fabric the same size as a doily. Glue the doily on the fabric. The fabric will provide a beautiful background for the laciness of the doily. Write your message on the center part of the doily and add a few small red or pink hearts scattered around the doily itself.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you glue doilies, be aware that there is lots of room for glue to seep through because the edges are so lacy. Try using a glue stick or carefully painting on your glue to avoid seepage.
