Your family room is probably the room where your family spends the most time. The TV, stereo, Nintendo and computer all are potential fire hazards, if not properly maintained. To avoid a fire in your family room, take a few minutes to follow these simple steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Check all electrical wires and cords for appliances that you use in the family room. This includes electric clocks, televisions, stereo systems, computers and lamps. Make sure cords are not frayed.

  2. Step 2

Avoid using extension cords - use junction boxes with built-in ground fault interrupters (GFIs) instead. If there is a surge or short in the appliance, wiring or plug, the GFI will shut down the power.

  3. Step 3

Keep cords safely wrapped and covered, especially if you have young children.

  4. Step 4

Avoid using candles in the family room. If you choose to use them, place candles in safe, nonflammable holders and always extinguish them when you leave the room.

  5. Step 5

Make sure long curtains and furniture don't block heater vents.

  6. Step 6

If the family room has a fireplace, make sure it is guarded with a sturdy, secure screen.

  7. Step 7

Have your fireplace cleaned and checked if it has been more than a year since the last cleaning.

  8. Step 8

Never store any flammable materials near the fireplace.

Tips & Warnings
  • Dispose of any broken electrical appliances.
  • Check smoke detectors regularly.
  • Teach children not to play with matches.
  • Check all sofas and chairs after a smoker has been smoking there. Hot cigarette butts can start a fire in the cushions and the fabric.
