Bike shorts will make you much more comfortable on your bike - especially on longer rides.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Decide how much you want to spend. Bike shorts range in price from $20 to $80; more expensive shorts will fit better, breathe better and last longer.
Step2
Consider the number of panels. Cheap shorts generally have four panels, while the best shorts generally have eight, which will conform better to your body.
Step3
Observe the way they hang: On a hanger, four panel shorts will hang almost straight, eight panel shorts will have some curve to them.
Step4
Consider materials. Most shorts are made out of lycra. However, the quality and breathability varies considerably. Ask your local bike shop what they recommend.
Step5
Consider the inner padding, or chamois. Twenty years ago, these were made out of leather, but man-made materials have since taken over. Think medium amount of padding and good breathability.
Step6
Get a proper fit. The shorts should be somewhat tight, but comfortable. They shouldn't bunch up anywhere.
Step7
Consider colors. The traditional color is black. There is a reason for this - black doesn't show dirt.
Step8
Consider the care instructions. Most shorts can be washed in the washing machine, though it's best to line-dry them.
Step9
Consider bib shorts. Many people find these to be more comfortable because they don't bind at the waist. Be prepared to spend a bit more.
Step10
Consider knicker shorts, which give your knees some protection on colder days.

Tips & Warnings

  • On the coldest days, you should also wear tights which fit over your shorts.

on 8/14/2006 You already have a pair of bike shoes in your closet, They're called sneakers. Don't let a lot of specialized gear come between you and your bike. The less "stuff" you have to buy, wear, adjust, and polish, the more likely you are to actually ride your bike. Think like a kid on a summer day; a fat tired Schwinn and a whole world to explore.

on 8/8/2006 Don't look like a dork wearing your baggy shorts over your bike shorts. If you are that self conscious, maybe you should take up chess. It's like mud flaps and curb feelers on a Ferrari; you just don't do that.

on 11/22/2005 Simply wear a pair of baggy shorts over your biking shorts. Something loose and comfy, so it won't bind up.
Pockets are a plus!

on 11/22/2005 If you don't want to look like a geek with those tight spandex shorts, opt for buying a pair of cycling shorts that are a combination of cargo shorts outside and spandex shorts underneath.
