A thumbnail is a small image that links to a larger version of the same image. Thumbnails conserve page space, reduce download time and allow viewers to decide which images they wish to see. This tutorial uses Microsoft FrontPage 98 and 2000.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Start FrontPage and open the appropriate web.

  2. Step 2

Double-click to open the page the thumbnail will appear on.

  3. Step 3

Select Picture from the Insert menu or click the Insert Picture button on the toolbar.

  4. Step 4

Choose the image and click OK.

  5. Step 5

Click on the AutoThumbnail button on the toolbar. This button resembles a small image in front of a larger image, with an arrow indicating the smaller image. A thumbnail version of the image appears on the page. When users click the thumbnail, they'll see the entire image.

  6. Step 6

Drag the handles around the image to increase or decrease the thumbnail size.

  7. Step 7

Save the page and preview it in a browser. Click on the image to be sure it links correctly.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you don't see the AutoThumbnail option, make sure the Picture tools are selected. Right-click on a blank area of the toolbar and make sure the Pictures option is checked.
  • If the Pictures option is checked and the AutoThumbnail option still doesn't appear, click on the Help button to learn how to customize a toolbar.
  • When uploading the Web page to a server, be sure the original image and the thumbnail image are both uploaded. Otherwise, the image will show as broken.
