How to Cross the Wake in Slalom Kneeboarding

Contributor
By eHow Contributing Writer

Proper crossing of the wake is an essential aspect of a good slalom run.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Ride outside the right side of the wake, about 45 degrees from the boat.

  2. Step 2

Cut hard toward the wake, pulling the handle toward your right hip for a left cut.

  3. Step 3

Pull the handle close to your waist just before your reach the wake. At the same time, pull your knees toward your chest to lift the nose of the board.

  4. Step 4

Remain in your cutting position as you hit the wake, keeping your board on its edge.

  5. Step 5

Absorb the wake with your body as much as you can, so that you get as little air as possible.

  6. Step 6

Keep your weight back as the board goes into the air. Make sure the nose is higher than the tail, so that you don't nose-dive when you land. Keep the board angled so that it lands on its edge, and keep the handle close to your waist while in the air. If the boat pulls you forward, extend your arms slightly, then pull back in as you land.

  7. Step 7

Pull hard against the boat as the board hits the water, keeping the handle pulled toward your right hip.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you catch too much air off the wake, bring the nose up just before you hit the water by pulling your knees toward your chest.
  • The trick to a good slalom wake crossing is to get as little air as possible. The sooner you land, the more time you will have to set up for your next turn.
  • Always wear a life vest and observe proper boating safety rules when kneeboarding.
