How to Make Breakfast Couscous

Couscous for breakfast? Why not? It's hearty and satisfying, with just a little bit of texture. Serves one (but easily expandable for as many as you like). Does this Spark an idea?

  • 1 c. milk (or half milk, half water)
  • honey
  • maple syrups
  • brown sugars
  • 1/2 c. couscouses

Instructions

    • 1

      Bring the milk (or half milk and half water) and a sprinkle of salt to a slow boil in a small saucepan.

    • 2

      Add the couscous. Stir, cover, and turn off the heat.

    • 3

      Wait 5 minutes. Remove the cover and fluff the couscous.

    • 4

      Serve with brown sugar, honey or maple syrup.

Tips & Warnings

  • Milk can burn easily, so heat it at a moderate temperature and stir it from time to time. It's less likely to burn if you use a mixture of half milk and half water.

  • Add a few regular or golden raisins or chopped dates to the milk as you begin to heat it.

  • Add a sprinkle of cloves, cinnamon or allspice to the milk as well.

  • Use a little less couscous to leave the cereal slightly milky.
