For American students wanting to pursue graduate work in engineering, mathematics or science, a Winston Churchill Foundation Scholarship can provide between $7200 and $9000 plus tuition, fees and a $500 travel stipend for one academic year of study at Churchill College, University of Cambridge, England.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Check out the eligibility requirements: you must be a U.S. citizen with a bachelor's degree but not a doctorate, and you must be under 26 years of age when you accept the scholarship.
Step2
Contact your school's Churchill Foundation representative to obtain an application package. Be sure to find out from your campus rep when the deadline for application is; it usually falls around November 15th.
Step3
Make sure you have what it takes to be a Churchill Scholar. The selection committee looks for outstanding academic achievements; superior GRE scores; a tendency toward creative and original work; a high degree of character and dependability; and a concern for solving the problems of society.
Step4
Work with your faculty advisor and your campus representative to secure an official nomination from your institution.
Step5
Begin work on your application several months in advance of the November deadline. You need to have time to take the GRE and collect transcripts and other materials.
Step6
Choose the program you want to study in England. Options include a master's of philosophy or a certificate of postgraduate study in one of many engineering or science fields, a certificate of advanced study in mathematics, or a diploma in computer or mathematical science.
Step7
Talk to past and present professors, teaching assistants and other professionals about writing letters of recommendation for you. Four recommendation letters are necessary to complete your application.
Step8
Remember to have your GRE results sent directly to the Churchill Foundation. The Foundation's GRE code is R3922-2.
Step9
Compile the documents necessary to send with your application, including the original and five copies of the University of Cambridge application form, a proposal of your study objectives, reference letters on provided forms, transcripts, and a completed medical certificate.
Step10
Wait until January to find out if you've been approved by the screening committee, then keep your fingers crossed that in mid-April you will be notified of your acceptance to the University of Cambridge as a Churchill Scholar.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a daily planner to coordinate all important aspects of your application.
  • Keep in mind the Churchill Scholarships do make additional provisions for a married scholar's spouse.
  • Contact the Churchill Foundation with any questions or for further information by writing to P.O. Box 1240, Gracie Station, New York, NY 10028, or by calling (212) 879-3480. Or visit the foundation's Web site (see Related Sites) to do additional research on the scholarship and programs available at Churchill College.
  • Don't be discouraged by the weighty competition for these scholarships. The Churchill Foundation awards approximately 10 scholarships each year on a national basis.
  • Check out any scholarship thoroughly before you apply to make certain it is legit.
