As with the rest of your fly-fishing gear, proper maintenance can prolong the life of your equipment. This is especially true for flies.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fly-fishing Wading Jackets
  • Backing/fly-fishing
  • Fishing Fly Box
  • Fishing Fly Kit
  • Fly-fishing Flies
  • Fly-fishing Leaders
  • Fly-fishing Lines
  • Fly-fishing Nets
  • Fly-fishing Reels
  • Fly-fishing Rods
  • Fly-fishing Vests
  • Waders
  1. Step 1

Keep your flies in fly boxes to keep them from getting crushed and tangled.

  2. Step 2

Allow the flies to dry out after fishing and before storing them. Attach them to the fleece patch on your fishing vest so that they air-dry. This can help prevent misshapen flies and rusty hooks.

  3. Step 3

Remove all of your flies as soon as possible in the event that your fly box gets wet.

  4. Step 4

Keep your flies out of boxes with metal clips. These can crush your flies. Also, be careful not to shove flies into box compartments that are too small to hold them.

Tips & Warnings
  • Hold your fly over steam from boiling water if it gets crushed or misshapen. The steam should make it snap back into shape.
