Things You'll Need:
- Bicycling Magazine
- Mountain Bike Magazine
- Mountain Bikes
-
Step 1
Loosen up a little. You can't expect to talk like a rider if you don't act like one.
-
Step 2
Ride with experienced mountain bikers. You'll learn a lot of the lingo just by hanging out with those who use it.
-
Step 3
Buy a beginner's guide to mountain biking. Most mountain biking books include a glossary of terms.
-
Step 4
Try this biker talk for starters: astro boy - an airborne rider; baby head - a skull-sized rock on the trail; bacon - trail rash (the kind you get in a crash); bonk - run out of energy; endo - to go hurtling over the handlebars in a crash or, in much better style and control, rock the bike forward onto its front wheel; face plant - the name says it all; knobby - a mountain bike tire; rig - your bike.
-
Step 5
Read biking magazines and check out mountain biking Web sites like mtb.live.com.
-
Step 6
Ride as much as you can. Before you know it you'll have mastered a new language.
