Instructions

    • 1

Decide how you're going to carry your tools. You should be able to find a good, lightweight seat bag at a bike store. You could also carry tools in a hydration pack or other lightweight backpack or fanny pack.

    • 2

Pack wrenches: one adjustable wrench, a set of Allen wrenches and a crank-arm wrench.

    • 3

Take care of your chain. Bring chain lube, extra chain links and a chain tool.

    • 4

Be ready for tire problems. Pack a patch kit, a pump, tire irons and a spare tube.

    • 5

Pack a Phillips-head screwdriver for on-the-trail adjustments of your derailleurs.

Tips & Warnings

  • To learn more about bike repair, talk to the mechanics at a bike shop. Your tools are handy only if you know how to use them.

  • Mountain biking is a physically demanding sport that could result in serious injury. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.

I carry a number of tools for my bike - generally a tool for every possible problem I can think of. Then I throw in a basic Swiss army knife for all the other problems I can't forsee.
