How to Mountain Bike Safely

In mountain biking, as with any sport, if you know the rules and respect your personal limitations, you can greatly reduce the risks.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Wear the right gear - a helmet, padded gloves and protective eyewear are standard issue.

  2. Step 2

    Ride in control. Avoid riding terrain that is beyond your skill level or is potentially dangerous.

  3. Step 3

    Plan ahead and be prepared for anything. Carry tools, extra food, plenty of water and clothing for all weather conditions.

  4. Step 4

    Tell your friends where you are going before you leave. That way, if you get lost or otherwise do not return, they will know where to look for you.

  5. Step 5

    Get the scoop on a new trail before you begin your ride. You can do this by talking to other riders the employees at a local bike shop.

  6. Step 6

    Obey the rules of the trail on which you are riding.
