The perfect time to apply feng shui principles is when you're designing a new dwelling. Creating a balanced environment positively affects the health and success of a home's denizens.

Step1

Consider hiring a feng shui consultant to help you correctly interpret the principles. Ask for credentials and references. Find out where the consultant was trained and how many consultations has he or she has done. Ask which feng shui tradition he or she practices.

Look for a plot of land that's level and generally rectangular. Avoid jagged rocks or nearby peaks, but rounded hills and forested hillsides are alright, as are creeks, gentle rivers and small waterfalls.

Plan a home that's square or rectangular. Odd-shaped or angular buildings have feng shui challenges that are difficult or expensive to undo.

Step4

Make the building generally symmetrical in shape, and avoid angular protrusions.

Include a foyer in the floor plan. Don't have the front door open directly into a room (where chi would be permitted to escape), and don't have the front door aligned directly with the back door or large back windows.

Step6

Avoid floor-to-ceiling windows in bedrooms; these let too much chi escape. Don't build narrow, dark corridors, mazelike room arrangements, triangular rooms or steep stairways.

Step7

Choose smooth surfaces for interior walls. Curved walls and surfaces also encourage positive flow of chi.
