How to Set Up a Bathroom Schedule

Tired of playing drill sergeant every morning, trying to hustle the kids in and out of the bathroom and off to school? Does the bathroom look like a war zone after everyone's finished? With some color coding and a schedule, daily bathroom battles can have to a peaceful resolution.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Set up staggered bathroom schedules if people outnumber plumbing. Set up the schedule based on who leaves the house first and who takes the longest to get ready. (Have the slow ones go last, so they don't push everyone else off schedule.) If several people leave at the same time, and if a hairstyle can handle it, shower the night before. Post the schedule on the door.
Step2
Free up the shower by taking makeup and hair supplies out of the bathroom and into the bedrooms, where all that's needed is a mirror and a plug.
Step3
Assign each family member a different color towel and washcloth. Give everyone their own hook as well.
Step4
Keep a basket with makeup, clips, hair products, comb, brush and blow-drier outside the bathroom. As long as there's a plug and a mirror, serious primpers can continue their work without causing a bathroom bottleneck.

Tips & Warnings

  • Put a clock or kitchen timer in the bathroom to keep time.
  • Give everyone a plastic caddy for storing personal supplies, such as brushes, combs, shampoo and other hair products; toothbrushes, toothpaste and dental floss; makeup and other toiletries. If space is tight, these bins can stay in bedrooms when not in use.
