How to Organize Pet Supplies

Pets come with almost as much stuff as people do. From cans and bags of food and treats, to crates, leashes, toys, medications and kitty litter, there's plenty to keep track of when the animal kingdom takes up residence in your home.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Pour dry food into an air-tight aluminum, glass or heavy-duty plastic container with a close-fitting lid. Choose one large enough to hold the contents of the size food bag you typically buy. Keep the container close to food dishes. Save time with the automatic feeders (for animals who actually have portion control).
Step2
Stack cans of food on a lazy Susan or shelf. You'll be able to spin and find Fluffy's favorite flavor.
Step3
Place leashes and extra collars on hooks located near the mostused door or on the inside wall of an entry-area closet. Keep travel gear--Frisbees, collapsible water bowls and old towels-- here as well. Keep a plastic bag tied around the leash so you'll never forget one when you go on walks. See 47 Prepare Grab 'n' Go Activity Bags.
Step4
Stow pet-care products, such as grooming supplies, medications and ointments in a bucket. Hang from the same hook you've got the leash on.
Step5
Corral toys and bones in a basket near the pet's bed or crate.

Tips & Warnings

  • See 269 Prepare for a New Cat or Dog.
  • If you have to search for the packet of heartworm pills each time a dose is due, keep them in a pet file. Put the dosage dates in your calendar.
  • Dry pet food will say fresh for six to nine months when stored in a cool, dry place. Soft, moist food will stay fresh for three to six months if kept in its original package with the top rolled tightly closed. Cover opened cans and refrigerate.
