Training a deaf dog begins with teaching your pet to pay attention to you when you're ready to give a command. Collars that have built-in silent "pagers" are made to alert your pet and direct his or her attention to you through vibration.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pager Collars
  • Dog Treats
  1. Step 1

Put the pager collar on and give the vibrating signal.

  2. Step 2

Reward your dog immediately with a tasty treat.

  3. Step 3

Understand that the instant reward gives your dog a positive association with the vibration sensation, while simultaneously directing attention to you.

  4. Step 4

Repeat this page-and-reward process 10 times in the same training session.

  5. Step 5

Repeat the training session several times in the next day or two, always making sure to pair the vibration with a treat.

  6. Step 6

Begin teaching your dog simple commands such as "sit" and "down" once your pet has mastered the pager call.

Tips & Warnings
  • Understand that the pager collar only produces a vibration - it does not shock your dog.
