A friendship bracelet has a knot as a symbol of a friendship that can't be broken. Let your friends know how special they are with a hand-tied friendship bracelet. Use a mix of yours and your friend's favorite colors for a more special bracelet.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

    null

  1. Step 1

Select two colors of embroidery floss for your friendship bracelet.

  2. Step 2

Cut three 27-inch strands of each color to make a total of six strands.

  3. Step 3

Hold the ends of all six strands together and make a knot about 1 inch from one end.

  4. Step 4

Secure the knotted end by clipping it on a clipboard.

  5. Step 5

Separate the colors so you have three strands of one color on the right and three strands of the other color on the left.

  6. Step 6

Pick up the three strands on the left.

  7. Step 7

Wrap them over and under all three strands on the right, forming a loop.

  8. Step 8

Poke the strands through the loop and pull tight, forming a single knot.

  9. Step 9

Pick up the three strands on the right.

  10. Step 10

Wrap them over and under the strands on the left, forming a loop.

  11. Step 11

Poke the strands through the loop and pull tight, forming a knot.

  12. Step 12

Repeat steps 6 through 11 until your bracelet is the desired length.

  13. Step 13

Hold the ends of the strands together and make a knot.

  14. Step 14

Trim the ends to about 1 inch.

  15. Step 15

    Try on your friendship bracelet.

Tips & Warnings
  • Select colors that have special significance to you and your friend - your friend's and your favorite colors, the colors of your eyes, or the colors of your birthstones make good choices.
  • Make specially colored holiday friendship bracelets - pink and red for Valentine's Day; black and orange for Halloween; or black, red and green for Kwanzaa.
  • Add beads to your friendship bracelet by threading them through the two middle strands.
  • Beads are a choking hazard for young children.

on 2/15/2008 Some patterns that I have used tend to curl in at the edges (like the zig-zag). One simple solution to correct this problem is to iron or press the bracelet with steam. To make your bracelet more portable - double over your strings, to get a loop in the beginning. You can put a safety pin through the loop and pin it to your jeans. I have staved off many hours of car-trip boredom using this tactic!

on 11/22/2005 Train your index finger to loop through the string and bend around the loose one to bring it back up again. It's faster, easier, and less taxing on the eyes and hands.

on 11/22/2005 It's a little more expensive, but if you use double strands of embroidery floss when you make your necklaces you will find them to be be easier to work with. Your bracelets will feel a little bit fuller, the colors will stand out more boldly and it's an easy way to make a bigger bracelet without all the added work of tieing more knots.
