There are a number of sources you can turn to for up-to-date information on artificial limbs. And finding information about artificial limbs is easier than ever, thanks to the Internet.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Seek and consult a certified prosthetist. Discuss your concerns and your lifestyle. He or she is the one who will fit you and is the best expert on prostheses.

  2. Step 2

If you are receiving physical therapy, talk to your therapist. If he or she works with amputees, your therapist should have some knowledge about the different types of prostheses and how to obtain them.

  3. Step 3

Join a support group, either in person (ask local hospitals for information) or online. Asking other people who are using artificial limbs is one of the best ways to find out what works, as well as the pros and cons of the different kinds.

  4. Step 4

Call the companies that manufacture artificial limbs. Learn about the newest models and what might work for you, and ask for brochures. While these are meant to help sell their products, they can supply you with information about the various types on the market and how they work.

  5. Step 5

Surf the Internet for sites such as Amputee Online or the Amputee Net Center. These large informational sites and/or organizations help people deal with the loss of a limb and provide information on such things as prosthesis. A large number of prosthetic manufacturers also advertise on the Internet.

  6. Step 6

Speak with your insurance company, which may have several companies that it works with. In addition, you may be restricted as to what type of prosthesis your insurance company will cover.

Tips & Warnings
  • The most technologically advanced prosthesis may not automatically be the best for you. Speak to knowledgeable experts, try out different types of prosthesis and choose what will work best for your lifestyle.
