How to Become a Movie Star

Although there are many movie roles in the world that need filling, a scant few are starring roles for that irresistibly charming, fabulously talented actor around whom directors craft top movies. To get your star on the Walk of Fame, you need plenty of luck and talent. Don't invest in those Revo sunglasses yet--years of hard work lie ahead.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately challenging

Step1
Start early. Try out for parts in school plays, community theater, anything that gives you stage time.
Step2
Take acting lessons from an accredited local theater company or university, or a professional actor's studio.
Step3
Attend one of the country's top notch drama and performing arts programs including those at New York University (nyu.edu), the Julliard School (julliard.edu), Yale (yale.edu), Carnegie Mellon (cmu.edu/cfa/drama), Northwestern University (northwestern.edu), North Carolina's School of the Arts (ncarts.edu), and the California Institute of the Arts (calarts.edu).
Step4
Audition for school films, indies and low-budget films. Go to Auditions.net to explore your options. Expect constant rejection: Perseverance and resilience are your greatest allies.
Step5
Join the Screen Actors Guild (SAG.org), the labor union from which major movies hire their acting talent. You can't become a SAG member until you land a role, and you can't be cast in a film until you become a SAG member, a catch-22 that many film careers have foundered on. In order to break the stalemate, you need to "know" somebody who will help you get a speaking role of just one word. Or, take advantage of SAG's recently introduced points system (sag.org). Work as an extra and attend sanctioned events to build up enough points to qualify for membership. Or, take your chances and audition at a cattle call-- casting directors are always looking for new talent.
Step6
Move to New York or Los Angeles and get an agent. He or she gets information about auditions for roles, either directly from casting directors and producers or from "the breakdowns," a daily faxed list of roles being cast that is only available to agents, managers and union members. It's brutally tough to get an agent if you're not a SAG member, and you might have to make due with a manager until you get a break.
Step7
Look good. This isn't necessary for every role, but the better you look, the more buzz you'll get. In fact, if you look good enough, you can skip all the other steps. See 28 Get a Drastic Makeover.
Step8
Choose your films carefully. It may be impossible to predict a hit--in fact Hollywood is littered with stories of actors tuning down a role that turned out to be a sensation--but pick roles (and directors) that will further the development of your craft.

Tips & Warnings

  • The New York Film Academy (nyfa.com) offers a summer acting camp for high school students.
  • See 486 Win an Academy Award and 377 Organize a Community Theater Troupe.
  • Work on your singing ability to open up new roles and expand your vocal skills.
  • If you had to make a choice between being really gifted and really driven, choose drive. Hard work will get you farther than talent any day (but having talent helps!).
  • SAG membership can be expensive, with initiation fees of almost $1,200 and annual dues based your earnings.
  • Assemble a portfolio with professional head shots and descriptions of your roles and training. See 180 Become a Model for more tips. Make sure your headshot reflects the image you want to portray and the roles you're looking for.
  • Don't be a prima donna. If you're difficult to work with, you won't get call-backs.

on 3/24/2008 Everyone wants to be famous! but its so unfair that only basically singers, actors, models, and athletes are! its just not fair. If someone really excels at something good, even if its not singing, acting, modeling, or a sport, rhey should be recognized for it. who says that the only important people are the entertainers? why arent artists and writers on the covers of cosmopolitan, elle, or 17? These 4 categories shouldnt be all that people are limited to if they want to be famous. its also disgustingly unfair that only very attractive people (for the most part) can become famous. Yes its nice to look at a pretty face, but most people werent born like these nearly perfect looking people. People look up to them, compare themselves to these loved people, and feel like crap!! Also, only choosing attractive people allows even less people the opportunity to become famous. We need REAL people

on 3/24/2008 everyone just wants to be famous. and thats ok! why wouldnt u? i do too! but here's what i think is unfair: that only singers, actors, models, and athletes are famous, really. I think that people who are really talented in art or writing for example should be able to have such recognition too! Art is a part of everything and enjoyed by everyone. And without writers we would be nowhere. So why can't they be on magazine covers too?? why is there such a narrow group of people who get to be "stars". its just not fair. If you excel at something great, you should be recognized for it, even if its not singing, acting, modeling, or being good at a sport.

Also, its SO freakin unfair that very attractive people are much more likely to become famous. YES we like seeing pretty faces, but its unrealistic images for people to look up to. people compare themselves to these nearly perfect looking ch
