How to Edit an Existing Relationship in Microsoft Access

If your requirements for information retrieval change, it's simpler and quicker to edit an existing relationship in Microsoft Access than to delete it and start over. These instructions are for Access 97.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Close all tables that are open.

  2. Step 2

    Use the F11 key to open the Database window. Click the Table tab.

  3. Step 3

    Click the Relationship icon on the toolbar, or select Relationships from the Tools menu. A window appears displaying your relationships.

  4. Step 4

    Locate the tables that you want to change, then double-click on the line that joins them. A window appears.

  5. Step 5

    Edit the relationship options using the guide in the window.

  6. Step 6

    Click to set referential integrity if desired. Referential integrity ensures that relationships between related tables are valid and that you don't accidentally delete related data.

  7. Step 7

    Click OK.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the tables you want to change don't appear when you open the relationship window, click Show Table on the toolbar and double-click each table to be added.
