How to Remove the Primary Key in a Microsoft Access Database

Remove the primary key only if you're sure you won't need relationships between the tables in your database. Remember, you can only run queries on tables that have been joined in a relationship. These instructions are for Access 97.

        If the primary key occurs in an existing relationship, first delete the relationship.

        Open the table in Design view.

      • 3

        Select the row that contains the primary key by clicking on the Row Selector. This is the small box or field that occurs on the far left of a row.

        With the row selected, click on the Primary Key button from the toolbar, or select Primary Key from the Edit menu.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Removing the primary key doesn't delete the fields, but only removes the primary key features.
