How to Grow a "Live" Easter Basket

Nothing says Easter and spring like a basket brimming with colorful eggs, chocolate bunnies and jewel-toned jelly beans. With just a little advance preparation you can tuck those goodies into a nest of real grass.

Things You'll Need:

• Baskets
• Grass Seeds
• Potting Soil
• Shallow Pots
• Baskets

1. Gather your supplies and start about three weeks before Easter.

2. Find a shallow container that's just big enough to fit inside the basket you want to use. (Make sure the pot has drainage holes.)

3. Fill the container with potting soil and sprinkle grass seed on top.

4. Place it outdoors in the sun or on a sunny windowsill.

5. Water it daily.

6. Wait until the grass has grown a few inches high and then tuck the container into a basket and let the Easter Bunny fill it with springtime treats.

Tips & Warnings

• You can buy small boxes of grass seed at any nursery or hardware store. If you're growing your minilawn on a windowsill, choose a shade-loving variety.
• In 2000, Easter falls on April 23, so you'll want to sow your grass seed around April 2.
