"Li" is strength derived from body movement. Unlike "jing," which is the internal power of converted "chi" (internal life energy), "li" requires direct physical motion. With cultivation of "chi" into "li," the martial artist can increase striking power.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Tai Chi Medidation Music
  • Martial Arts Supplies
  • Martial Arts Uniforms
  • Tai Chi Videos
Step1
Begin with meditation to become aware of your own "chi." Empty your mind of stressful thoughts and concentrate on the rhythm of your body. Sense the blood flow, your breathing, etc., and feel the body's natural rhythm.
Step2
Push your breathing lower until your reach an area about 3 inches below the navel and 2 inches inward (the "tan t'ien," known as the center of your "chi," your internal life energy).
Step3
Inhale deeply into your diaphragm and hold your breath briefly.
Step4
Expel your breath violently with an explosive contraction of your diaphragm. Yell at the same time, letting the air and force come from deep within your solar plexus.
Step5
Strike at the same time you yell ("kiap") to focus your "chi" into "li" power.

Tips & Warnings

  • The growth of your internal power is a gradual process, requiring long periods of exercise. Practice meditation every day to harness your "chi."
  • If you have any condition that would impair or limit your ability to engage in physical activity, please consult a physician before attempting this activity.
