How to Clean Mushrooms

Some experts recommend just brushing or wiping off mushrooms with a damp towel, since they are so absorbent and may lose some flavor if soaked in water. However, others think it's not such a big deal.

Things You'll Need:

• Mixing bowls
• Paper towels
• Mushrooms
• Dishtowels

1. To clean mushrooms without soaking, wipe them with a clean, damp towel or special mushroom brush. Be sure to wipe the stems, too, if you will be using them.

2. 
    

   Otherwise, put the mushrooms in a bowl of water.

3. 
    

   Swish the mushrooms around until the dirt comes off.

4. 
    

   Rinse in fresh water.

5. Dry the mushrooms well with a towel or paper towel.
