1. Meet Judy Blume, a contemporary American writer of many books for children. View the awards she has won, which are listed on her Web site. (See judyblume.com.)

2. Know that a few of Judy Blume's books have caused controversy. Some for middle-school and young adult readers deal with sensitive subjects such as puberty, teen sex, divorce, obesity and handicaps.

3. Judge for yourself. Some say the author is too explicit; others say she deals with subjects in a relaxed, open and mature way that encourages children to be honest about their feelings.

4. Realize that Judy Blume has written three picture books, "Freckle Juice," "The One in the Middle is the Green Kangaroo," and "Pain and the Great One."

5. See that the author has written several popular books for young readers including "Superfudge" and "Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great."
