How to Execute Best Man Duties

There's a lot more to being best man than planning the bachelor party
and standing next to the groom. In large part, you will perform many
of the wedding tasks so the groom doesn't have to worry about them,
and help out your brother or friend at a time when he needs you most.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start saving. You'll be paying for your tuxedo, the bachelor party and gifts, as well as airfare and hotel costs.

  2. Step 2

Consult with the groom about the attire for the male attendants. Arrange for all groomsmen's tux rentals, including their measurements. You'll also be in charge of returning them.

  3. Step 3

See 332 Plan a Bachelor or Bachelorette Party.

  4. Step 4

Prepare a sentimental or funny toast for the rehearsal dinner and reception. If you're shy, simply ask everyone to raise their glasses to the couple's happiness and new life. Be a class act: Don't humiliate the groom or the bride.

  5. Step 5

Take charge of the getaway car. Make sure it arrives on time, and decide if and how the groomsmen will decorate it.

  6. Step 6

Keep the groom calm before the ceremony. Give him water or anything else he needs. Humor helps.

  7. Step 7

Lead the groomsmen in ushering guests into the church and bridesmaids down the aisle.

Tips & Warnings
  • Check out AfterHours.com for a cheat sheet on selecting tuxedos.
  • Keep an eye out for female guests--young and old-- who may be in need of a dancing partner. Ask them to join you in a dance.

on 8/5/2009 My husband was asked to be a best man, he hasn't heard from the groom since he was asked about three months ago. my husband has never stood up in a wedding, and we eloped so he had no clue. now a week before the wedding the bride hands me a list of duties for him to perform. and not to mention we were left off the invitation list so we had no clue what time it started or where it was at. What to do

on 8/6/2008 Some good advice here. I also got a lot out of the Best Man Bible (http://www.thebestmanbible.com). Pretty exhaustive.

on 1/27/2006 Get breath mints and a package of combs.
Remind the groomsmen to go easy on the cologne, you never know who's allergic to what.
