Step 1
Check the CART schedule. It rivals Formula 1, with races on US ovals and road courses as well as races in Canada, Brazil, Japan and Australia.
-
Step 2
Watch CART racers on high-speed ovals such as those in the Michigan and California races. Teams use the Hanford device, a modified rear wing allowing wheel-to-wheel racing and multiple passes for position.
-
Step 3
Remember wheel-to-wheel racing doesn't mean "wheel-on-wheel." When open wheel race cars touch there's invariably damage to suspensions or wings. That means a pit stop, loss of position or even being knocked out of the race.
-
Step 4
Note there are several teams fielding two cars, but "team orders" may not come into play unless the series championship is at stake.
-
Step 5
Listen for terms like "tight" or "push" and "loose" from the scanner frequencies or from announcers. Teams may make suspension or wing adjustments at a pit stop.
-
Step 6
Watch those pit stops. They're as important in CART racing as in other series.
-
Step 7
Note the race pace. Fuel conservation and saving tire wear can allow for a hard charge at the finish.
-
Step 8
Keep abreast of news and rumors. Word is circulating that CART teams may build cars and take on the IRL teams at the 2000 Indy 500.
-
Step 1
Check those cars - they're pure open-wheel racing machines built around carbon fiber monocoque pods by Swift, Reynard, Penske and Lola.
-
Step 2
Listen to the engines - they're turbo-charged V-8s built by Ford Cosworth, Honda, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota.
-
Step 3
Take a pit tour - these 2.65 aluminum alloy V-8s turn 14,000 rpm and produce more than 700 horsepower. You'll never forget the piercing howl of a CART motor at full song.
-
Step 1
Look for drivers from around the world in the CART series - Michael Andretti from the United States, Patrick Carpentier and Paul Tracy from Canada, Mark Blundell from Great Britain, Adrian Fernandez from Mexico and Christian Fittipaldi from Brazil.
-
Step 2
Check out some of the exciting new stars in CART racing - Max Papis, Juan Montoya (rumored to be upfor a seat in Formula 1), Helio Castro-Neves and Tony Kanaan.
-
Step 3
Follow Kenny Brack, a Swede who won the 1999 IRL Championship, as he moves over to take on CART veterans.
