How to Plan an Elopement

No longer strictly for couples who decide to marry on the spur of the
moment or need to (ahem) rush things along, elopements are increasingly
favored by those who want a simple wedding ceremony. Perhaps
the two of you covet privacy and prefer not to be the center of attention
at a lavish wedding, or are on a shoestring budget. Whether your
destination is a chapel in Vegas, the steps of city hall or a quiet mountaintop,
even a speedy tying of the knot takes some planning.

    Instructions

      • 1

Decide if you'll take the plunge in complete secrecy or in relative simplicity with a small group of friends and relatives.

      • 2

Set your budget for the event, then decide on a venue. Agree on a destination you both enjoy or have always wanted to visit. Or just head to city hall.

      • 3

Find out if your state requires a blood test or a physical examination before marriage (only a few still do). Tests are intended to show whether either party is infected with a venereal disease. Many states also have waiting periods before marriage. Check with the county clerk.

      • 4

Find an officiant to perform your ceremony. He or she will often be able to make recommendations for hotels, caterers, bakers and florists.

      • 5

Hire a photographer or videographer to capture on film even the speediest of nuptials. See 330 Hire a Photographer.

      • 6

Exchange your vows and let the honeymoon begin!

    Tips & Warnings

    • If you choose to elope at a resort, plan to marry during its off-peak season for the best deals.

    • See 325 Budget for a Wedding and 242 Prepare a Prenuptial Agreement.

    • Keep in mind that the officiant must be able to issue the marriage license in the city and county where he or she is registered.

    • Some photographers will charge you by the roll and simply hand you the undeveloped film after it's shot. You handle the printing yourself for far less than the cost of standard wedding packages.
