There are two types of supermarket shoppers: Those with a game plan
and those who meander from the produce department to the freezer
aisle and back again for that forgotten bunch of celery. Efficient shopping
all starts with a foolproof list, good timing and steely focus.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

See 302 Create Effective Shopping Lists.

  2. Step 2

Review your list one last time before you head out. Does it have the items you need for the week's menus and to restock staples?

  3. Step 3

Check advertisements for sales, clip the appropriate coupons, and attach them to your list. Don't forget the membership card that entitles you to extra discounts.

  4. Step 4

Have a snack: You'll cut down on SSS (starving shopper syndrome) and impulse buys at the checkout line. See 24 Choose a Weight Loss Plan.

  5. Step 5

Shop first thing in the morning, if possible. It's the least crowded time. Your trip will be less hectic, and bargains easier to spot.

  6. Step 6

Ask questions. Employees are there to help and can cut down on time spent pinballing around the store.

  7. Step 7

Start with produce and dry goods and end with meats, seafood and other perishables.

  8. Step 8

Stick to your list--it will help you save time and money.

Tips & Warnings
  • Double-bag meats and seafood so they don't contaminate other foods.
