How to Call South Korea From the United States

1. Determine what time it is in South Korea before you call. The country is 14 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time in the United States, and 9 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.

2. Dial 011, the international access code.

3. Dial 82, the country code for Korea.

4. Dial the city code for the city you wish to call. The city code for Seoul, South Korea's capital, is 2; Osan is 339; Chung Ju is 431.

5. Dial the remaining digits.

Tips & Warnings

• If you follow these steps but still can't connect, dial 00 and ask the international operator to help you place the call.
• It can be very expensive to call long-distance during business hours, so try to make your phone calls in the evenings and on weekends.

on 11/22/2005 City codes and cell phone prefixes in South Korea start with a zero. For example: Seoul city code is actually 02. Cell phones are 010, 011, 019, etc.

To place a call from the U.S., you have to drop the zero from the city code. So if someone in Korea tells you their phone number is zero plus something (such as 011-7374-8383) remember to drop the first zero.
