Spreaders are used to spread fertilizer, seeds and some types of pesticides around the garden. You'll need a spreader specifically suited to your task; here's how to know what to buy.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Know what you're looking for. There are two basic types of spreaders: broadcast spreaders and drop spreaders. Broadcast spreaders shoot the desired material out and away from the machine in a wide arc. Drop spreaders drop the material directly out of the machine onto the soil below.

  2. Step 2

Use a broadcast spreader to apply fertilizer or to broadcast seed over a large area. Broadcast spreaders will not work with dense, heavy material such as compost or mulch.

  3. Step 3

Use a drop spreader to apply mulch, compost, fertilizer or pesticides. Because this tool drops the material directly out of the machine onto the soil below, you have more control as to exactly where the material is applied. Drop spreaders are great for small lawns or garden beds.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wash any type of spreader thououghly with fresh water after use. Fertilizer and pesticides contain salt, which promotes rusting.
  • Apply a fine oil to all moving parts after washing.
  • Store in a dry location.
