Instructions

Text Size: +
Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Tips & Warnings:

  • For spiral curls, twist your hair before rolling it up.
  • Remember that larger rollers make big, bouncy curls, while skinnier rollers make tighter, smaller curls.
  • Excessive heat can damage your hair. Deep-condition regularly and use heat-protecting products to minimize the damage.
  • Be careful when handling hot rollers; they can burn fingers.

Application

Step1
Plug in hot rollers and wait for it to heat up.
Step2
Blow-dry clean hair straight. (See "How to Blow-Dry Hair Straight," under Related eHows.)
Step3
Apply volumizing mousse or styling cream from roots to ends.
Step4
Separate hair into three sections and clip two sections up.
Step5
Use a comb to select a 2-inch section from the top of the unclipped hair. Comb it a few times to release any knots or tangles. Spray the section with a soft-hold hair spray.
Step6
Select a hot roller and fitting pin.
Step7
Place the roller 1 1/2 inches above the end of the separated section, and wrap the bottom of the strand around the roller.
Step8
Roll upward toward the scalp so that the entire section of hair is wrapped around the roller.
Step9
Secure the roller with a pin. Repeat until your entire head is in curlers.

Styling

Step1
Let the rollers set for 10 to 20 minutes.
Step2
Remove the rollers by removing the pins or fasteners and gently letting each curl unravel. Repeat until all the curlers have been removed.
Step3
Flip your hair over and gently run your fingers through your hair.
Step4
Style as desired.
Step5
Spray with extra-hold hair spray to prolong the life of your curls.

on 12/15/2006 Hot Rollers:

hot rollers can achieve a full head of flawless curls, typically in under an hour. Hot rollers generally have a small amount of wax inside that is heated when the set is plugged into an electrical outlet. When the curlers are ready for use, the color may change color so that you know to begin applying them.

Forget about fighting with the curling iron and trying to decide which way you want the curl to spiral. Instead, enjoy the remarkably easy process with hot rollers-once you have fastened the curlers in your hair, your hair will all curl simultaneously!

It is still a good idea to use some styling products such as a non-sticky hairspray or gel to retain the shape of the curls. (Curls formed by hot rollers tend to last considerably longer for me than those I create with a curling iron, as my hair is typically resistant to curling in general.)

Tip for Hot Rollers: Try to wash your hair the night before you want to employ the hot rollers. Sometimes very clean, sleek hair tends to resist curling.

Time Involved: Hot Rollers may take about 10 minutes to warm up and anywhere from 10-20 minutes to apply, and about 15 minutes to set. (Color of curler will revert back to original color to indicate that the curl has set.) Add additional time as necessary for styling your locks if you intend to use barrettes, bobby pins or other adornments and styling products.

on 8/17/2006 To get your curls to last extra long, spray them with hairspray while they're still in the rollers, right before you take the rollers out. Once you have taken the rollers out, spray your hair with another light mist of hairspray.

on 8/8/2006 If you don't have hot rollers, all you need to do is use aluminum foil. To do so; take about a 1" wide and about 6" long piece of aluminum foil and twist it so it looks like a stick. Then all you have to do is roll your hair on it and twist both ends of the foil together. Leave on overnight or at least 2 hours. Make sure you put hair spray on your hair while the foil is in place.
