Step 1
Plan to collect 15 to 25 flies of mixed patterns. Your choices should be split between wet flies and dry flies. Wet flies, such as nymphs, are used to fish below the surface of the water. Dry flies are meant to imitate insects that float on the surface of the water.
-
Step 2
Include woolybuggers of various colors, sizes 14, 16 and 18; pheasant tail nymphs and prince beads of different sizes like 14, 16 and 18; and adams and parachute adams flies.
-
Step 3
Make sure the flies you buy are constructed well. The tails shouldn't pull out when you lightly tug at them and the heads shouldn't unravel.
-
Step 4
Ask at your local fly shop what's working best for the waters you plan to fish. It may be best to gradually build up your fly set with pieces that you use most often in the areas you plan to fish regularly.
